16th Annual Florida Renaissance Festival ! |

Date: Saturdays during the Florida Renaissance Festival Feb 9th - March 9th starting at 10am with judging at 4.30 pm on Sundays. The first weekend is open for up to five participants; the following weekends are open to two participants. Three of the five sandcastles, determined by the judges, will stay up and will be entered in the judging for the following weekend. The final judging will be held on March 9th. The grand prizewinner will take home $1,000 in CASH!! Site: Each sculptor will be assigned a specific 20 X 20 area (Teams working outside of their assigned areas will be disqualified.) Only the registered contestants are allowed in the plot at any time. Any number of helpers may be recruited for work outside the plots to haul water up to the perimeter of the plot, coaching, cheerleading etc. Equipment: Only hand tools, buckets, hand-pump sprayers and misters are permitted. Before the beginning of the contest, any number of water containers may be filled. You may spray the sculptures with sealer at any time (even off the clock) and you can smooth your footprints after you spray. Theme: Anything in Renaissance or Medieval period style (dragons and mythical characters are permitted!). Participants that do not match this guidelines risk disqualification and removal of sculpture. Eligibility: You must register to participate. One participant and one assistant is allowed per site. The contest is open to individual adults (18 and older). Materials: Decorations and ornaments such as pennants, toy figures, shells and seaweed are permitted. Sculptures may not be artificially supported. Wood bracing is permitted but must be removed before judging. No ingredients may be mixed with sand to improve the texture. No fireworks will be allowed on sculptures. Powdered tempera paint or food coloring may be used for color but spray paint is NOT permitted. Participants must use their own supplies. Entry Deadline: Applications must be received by February 1st to participate on opening weekend opening weekend. Space is limited, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible to secure your spot in the Florida Renaissance Festival Sandcastle contest. Registration Fee: There is no registration fee. Participants will have to pay the regular festival admission. Check-In: All participants must check in at the Main Festival Office next to the box office upon arrival at the festival. Judging: Sculpting ends at 4:30pm on Sundays when judging begins. Entries will be judged on originality, intricacy, theme and overall appearance. Quality and appropriateness of form will be taken into consideration. Judges decisions are final. Participants risk disqualification if they do not adhere to these guidelines. Awards: 1st place - $1000 CASH! 2nd place - $100 and 4 season passes to the 2009 Florida Renaissance Festival 3rd place - $50 and 2 season passes to the 2009 Florida Renaissance Festival The organizers reserve the right to disqualify or exclude any individual and remove or disallow any sculpture at any time if: said individual(s) is/are in violation of the rules; conducting themselves in an un-sportsmanlike fashion; or is/are creating a sculpture not in keeping with a familial decorum as deemed appropriate by the organizers. You may wish to have your design pre approved by the organizers before you start, as the decisions on this as well as any matter surrounding or involving the event are at the sole discretion of the organizers.
